I know it's a bit early to be thinking fantasy baseball, so as the Winter Meetings near think of this as a topic of discussion for the GMs. The Minnesota Twins are supposedly
willing to listen to offers on
Delmon Young. The Twins are in a tough spot because Young is still only 23. He's got a rocket arm and makes great contact (hits for a good average). However he still hasn't learned that he doesn't have to swing at every pitch, his power hasn't developed, and he has a bit of an attitude. Further complicating the issue is the fact that the Twins traded Matt Garza to get him. Sure there are holes to fill but they can't give up on him now can they?
The Hardball Times
examines this issue and concludes that being a candidate for a breakout and having the skill set to actually breakout are two different things.
Me? I think it's time to give up on him being the next Vladimir Guerrero and instead hope he turns into
Al Oliver.

Don't trade Delmon. Anybody else that would play LF would have the "potential" label just like Delmon has and I DON'T want to see them fill the position with a guy like Shannon Stewart or Jaque Jones again. All of Minnesota's OF prospects are at least a year or two away, although they seem rich in that position.
Delmon is improving. K's down slightly and BB's up slightly. I would surely take an Al Oliver with 20 steals per year and a good defense. I'll take that. BUT, I think what we'll get, if patient, is more than Al Oliver. We are talking about a guy who is younger than us!!!! The kid is only 23 or 24 years old and he has 382 more major league hits than we do.
Gardenhire is with the club for 3 more years, he'll help develop Delmon and I think 2010 will be a MONSTER year after another improved season in 2009.
BUT, if the Twins could make any move this offseason, Delmon Young would not even make news like this. I am talking about a big move, say Garret Atkins. Then we wouldn't need D. Young to hit his "30 homer potential yet." Heck, even signing Casey Blake would take a lot of pressure of D. Young and push him to the 7th or 8th slot in the lineup, which would allow him to run more and probably score more with the top of the lineup behind him.
We have talked about this before.....he is still a future superstar and I DON'T want to see him traded, especially with his OF play and contract.
